Herding Trial, Berryville VA November 09

I decided to let Delyla try her paw at herding and we headed out to the trial in VA this past weekend. Delyla was to try for her HCT, I really thought she would go after the woolies full force but she showed much restraint. On the first day the judge tapped her livestock paddle on the ground and Delyla thought she had done "wrong" and totally quit working for us. The second day, with a bit of help from Susan, judge and farm owner, Delyla was able to get her first leg on the HCT.

The big surprise was Miss Jessa! Marti said we could put her in with the sheep and she "turned on" almost right away. She did not chase hard but would stand, observe, and seemingly herd. Who would have guessed this laid back girl would love woolies. She kept trying to get back in the pen after her turn was over. Fortunately for her, Lady needed a little help with the sheep so Jessa was allowed to go back in and assist. Together they made a great herding team. Jessa is too young to get an HCT title but did pass her HIT, herding instinct, oh say, three times over...

I came home and started looking for a herding opportunity nearby. It looked pretty glum, nothing closer than 90 minutes. But tucked away, I found an individual less than 25 minutes from us that is going to take us on! She has a variety of stock and we are looking forward to a new learning opportunity. Fina is a solidly built, smooth brown sable from the old line shilohs. She is very athletic, has great movement, and loves to play ball. She has dedicated herself to being my mother's constant companion, a very loving and loyal family guardian. Fina's progeny all posess her outstanding temperament and carry on the guardian tradition.

Sage is an NAKC/RARITIES Master Supreme Grand Champion and a Registered Pet Therapy dog who volunteers at the Children’s Behavioral Program at Underwood Hospital in Woodbury, NJ. He has beautiful movement, good size, and great boning and he has produced that in his puppies. He’s devoted to his family, athletic, laid back, an incredible Frisbee catcher, best friend, lap dog, and couch potato.

Fina is a true old line Shiloh, Sage is a 2nd generation Boz. The litter will be both smooth and plush consisting of golden or brown sables and possible duals. We expect size, temperament and personality plus from this litter.

I am pleased to announce the newest addition to the Brick Chapel Crew! There were two solid black pups in the Kilian/Carly litter and since we really were not planning on them it seemed appropriate that they might be named Joker & Jester. I could not resist that little black girl I have always wanted! Miss Jester (orange) is being called by several other names right now and at this moment answers best to Jessa Bear.

She just arrived here on Tuesday evening and has settled right into the pack. She seems to be a very laid back girl for the most part. She claimed an AC vent within 15 minutes of being here and that is where she spends the majority of her day. She has had fun chasing behind the big girls and trying to play with "Uncle" Konrad. She knows already that I am her person and she looks for me in the yard, she comes quickly and happily when called.

Sydney & Alyssa

Jessa and I made a short trip to town today where she visited with several folks including my best friend and her daughters. She was great with the girls! Sydney played her recorder for her and Jess listened intently. When Sydney finished the song Jessa let out a great big howl!!! We tried to get a repeat performance for video but she just wasn't up to it.

Tonight we had a few visitors whom she mostly ignored, there are more important things you know, like sleeping!

Minka takes a 1st place!

Our town has an annual arts festival complete with an amatuer photo contest. Each person is allowed to enter 4 photos and the "animal" photo I chose was of "candy cane", now Minka, on a snowy day. I am thrilled to announce that she

wowed the crowd and earned me a blue ribbon! There were definitely some technilogically better photos but Minka won their hearts.

Here are also some recently received photos of Miss Minka. She is growing up (quickly) in DC with her humans Eric & Sharon. According to them she "wows" the crowd everywhere they go. They once requested that we should warn potential buyers of the instant "celebrity status" you acquire along with a Shiloh pup.

July Playdate

On the spur of the moment I decided to see if anyone could join us for a playdate this past Sunday. The temp was going to be in the 70's and a perfect day for the dogs. Jan Jacobs agreed to serve as hostess so that we could meet and walk to her neighborhood dog park. Roll Call: Jan with Reva & Saber, Charlotte with Winston (FK1), Paulette with Kira (Rorrie/Konrad), and myself with Delyla (FK1). Once we got to the dog park there were numerous mixed breeds, an 11week old lab mix pup, a Visla, 2 Saint Bernards as well as numerous others. All were on very good behavior! The regulars were gathering to remark at the Shiloh reunion. Proir to leaving Jan's I also got to meet another Shiloh from her neighborhood who is littermate to the famous Gandolf who rescued a boyscout out in Washington state a few years ago.

Carly/ Kilian Litter!

We are thrilled to be a part of this awesome pairing with Ridgewood Shilohs! The 11 puppies were born on 6/11/2009. This is Carly's second litter and Kilian's first contribution to the genepool.

Delyla Update

Miss Delyla has been working hard on her obedience classes for the last year. She has completed several courses and finished Beginner's Rally-O two weeks ago. This Rally class was mostly to train her mom in the right way to do things. We hope to do some actual competition next spring once the AKC allows all breeds to register for field events. Our Obedience club even has a Rally team!

Kilian received his International Championship certificate from NAKC this week! We are finally official!

He finished his breed championship last summer with the TSSR but still needed 3 points with NAKC. He was able to get those points and a few more at the Buckeye Classic in May.

Kilian may have to take the rest of the summer off if his coat doesn't get done blowing soon. He looks like he's about a year old without all his fluff.

Well, what can you say... they are too cute! I was sitting in the pen with them at 5:45 this morning wishing I was still in bed yet marveling at the wonders of being on the bottom of a "puppy pile". There is a different view of the world from down there.

The adventure of the week has been daily trips out on the deck. In spite of my concern of them being cold... they were not rushing the door to get in, not even this morning at 5 degrees. We finally got a true snow this week and added a few inches yesterday. Today they came in looking like they had been rolled in sugar crystals. They enjoy chasing big sister Delyla both in the house and on the deck.

Two little girls, Sydney & Alyssa, came to visit us this week also.... the puppies thought I got them new chew toys I think. Hard to tell who was squealing more, the pups or the girls. Alyssa took some great pics for me with her new digital camera and we will post them soon.

Six week photos will be up by the weekend, here are the weights.... they outgrew the little scale this week...lol

Week 5

It is truly hard to believe that we are on week 5 already! Seems like they have gone from cereal to solid food almost overnight.

The puppies are working on their socialization skills and we have had visitors nearly every day. They had a great time playing with the Miller's in the livingroom on Tuesday night... what an outing that was!

Fina also found it necessary to let all the puppies out while we were gone the other day. I am sure they had a great time exploring the whole house.... wonder where all my websitters were that day?

I have decided on coat length this week and my initial guess was way off. The only smooth coats are Rudy and Spruce, all the rest are plush. So out of the 12 puppies that Fina has produced only 2 have been smooth. She obviously doesn't understand statistics...smile.... especially when you also consider that 6 of the 12 are also white. The best news is that all the hopeful puppy people have found a match!

The pups are eating a combination of moistened and hard kibble now with a bit of cereal and a bit of canned puppy food. The last few days have shown huge weight gains... I had to double check the scale today when I weighed them!

5 Week weights:
Rudy 10 lb 4 oz

The last litter ranged from 8 lb 2 oz to 10 lb 2 oz when they were this age so we are looking at the puppies being at least 15-18 lbs when they are ready to go home on the 24th.

Moving Day! 4 Weeks Old

Good Morning!

We started our New Years Eve by cleaning the puppy room, out with the old and in with the new! The puppies seemed to prefer being out of the box rather than in so today the box came down and vinyl flooring went in. They now have a sizeable area to romp and that's exactly what they are doing. From the looks of the video feed I may need to get a high speed camera to keep up!

The puppies have been eating gruel this week and today I added some mashed kibble. All have been doing well but Spruce was a little slow to decide this diet was ok. This morning was all an all out food fest though. Everyone has a nice looking set of teeth for the New Year also.

3 Weeks plus a little...

The pups hope everyone had a happy holiday. They got lots of rest, some good milk, and as requested a whole mouthful of puppy teeth! Their big sis Lyla has been telling them stories of milkbones and they are dreaming of getting their own.

Everyone got a holiday wipedown, nails trimmed, new collars and are ready for their belated holiday photo shoot.

The pups are becoming demanding when it is time to eat. They scream their little heads off even once they start nursing. The pups are beginning to interact with each other, biting noses, pawing, and even posturing (placing their head over the neck of another to show dominance). The posturing is likely just play at this point in time but it is interesting that the technique is already present in their "skills". The pups have also figured out how to get out of the whelping box... but of course, they just scream when they want back in.

Grandma got some good video clips of them playing and I will ask Jacki to link them up them this week. Week 3 photos coming soon!

2 1/2 Weeks....already!

Well the furballs have made much progress in the last few days! All eyes are wide open and the ears are opening as well. They now turn their heads when you open the door. I notice them sitting and kind of looking around frequently. They also deliberately stand up to pee...lol, and do so upon waking, like clockwork.

The cutest thing is that they have started to make vocalizations that sound like little barks and growls. Noel is by far the bossy one!

Week Two Updates

The Fina/ Konrad furkids celebrated their 2 week birthday yesterday with an extra nap! All of the pups have their eyes open now. They are getting pretty good at propelling themselves on all 4 feet. This is auntie Nancy's favorite time as they now remind her of drunken sailors trying to get back to the boat. Last night Fina was sitting (not laying) in the box and some of the pups started to nurse. You could see by the look on her face that this wasn't working for her. She started to lay down but she knew she would be laying on pups so she had to get up and turn around then lie down. When she did this all the pups ended up behind her... possibly intentionaly... they are so smart.... The children did not let this stop them! It looked like a race as they one by one crashed into mom's back and then finished the 1/4mile lap around her to the finishline.

The pups got new collars (yet again), had new photos taken, and were weighed just before bed. All have nearly tripled their birth weights.

Day 12

A few of the furballs are starting to open their eyes. Kringle and Noel will be the first to spot Reindeer if they make a test-run tonight! Along with the eyes, the ear canals are starting to open. You can really see them change right before you at this stage. In the time between our morning snuggle and our night cuddle they have grown stronger. They are doing much more "standing" than they were a day ago.

We had a few visitors yesterday, Fina's first visitors outside of the family. All did well and I think the future owners fell more in love with the puppies than they already were. Konrad did his best to charm the folks as well.

Time Flies When You Have Puppies!

Hard to believe that the puppies are 10 days old already. It seems like just yesterday I was sitting in the whelping box with Fina waiting on them to arrive.

In any case, the puppies are doing great! Those of you watching the webcam can probably see that they are starting to lift themselves up a little more when they propel accross the box. They remind of little sea turtles at this stage. Their eyes are not yet open but should be in the next few days.
